"Cast" Away

Kiana takes the prize for being the first in our family to have a broken bone, try three broken bones. It has been so nice outside, we have had to be out enjoying it. We went to the park the other day with friends for a picnic lunch and playing on the playground. I guess Kiana is the little dare devil once she has seen someone else try something. The older kids were going down the fireman's pole, so she thought she would give it a try. Needless to say, she did not hold on.
I, however, get the prize for worst mother of the year. I was just sitting and catching up with friends when she began to cry. Knowing that either she would come to me, one of the older kids wold bring her to me, or she would just stop crying and continue to play, I just waited. Once she was brought to me, I cuddle and hugged and tried to send her on her way, NOT HAPPENING. I told her to stop crying or we would go to the car, home, and to bed for her. She put all her strength into it and stopped, for a moment. "Okay, time to go play. Get up and go." NOT HAPPENING. I was getting irrated. She finally stood, and collapsed to the ground grying. It was then that I noticed how swollen her foot really was. I felt awful. We don't get broken bones in our family, I was still thinking maybe it was bruised and she'd be fine. Luckily, my friends advised me to take her to urgent care. They were awesome with us. We got there about 15 minutes after it happened, got immediately back, they took x-rays, fit her for a boot, and we were out of there with the x-rays and told to see an orthopedic surgeon. Really the whole thing was 20 minutes. She got hurt, taken there, x-rayed, and out in under an hour, impressive.
So, this is the jist of what happened. She went down the pole with her feet back, landing on the tops of them. Both feet were scrapped up. On the right foot, she crakced the first and last toe on the metatarsels (up by the ankle) and broke the three two in between. Pretty much all her toes were affected in the foot. She is swollen and black and blue. The orthopedic surgeon said it looked good though. The breaks were in a straigh line, and should heal quickly. They were on the opposite side of the growth plate and we will ha to go back in two weeks for more x-rays to make sure they are healing correctly. As of now, no surgery, yeah!!!

We have been carrying her EVERYWHERE!!! Kind of difficult with a 21 month old to chase after too, but it could be worse. The doctor said when it isn't hurting her as bad, she can walk with the boot she has on. They tried crutches but they were an inch too small for her.

She has really been a good sport about it all. She gets around and plays well with her sister just crawling around, but bathtime is a joke. My new best friend is my double stroller, I'm glad they both still fit in it. But really, I am surprsied at how well she is done and am very grateful for my sweet girl. It could have been worse.
Kiana enjoyed being a cheerleader for her soocer team on Saturday. I feel it is still important she goes and supports her team, but I feel bad she can't play. It is just the beginning of the season and maybe by the end, she can play again. At least it didn't happen in the middle of the summer during swimming lessons and other things. She is already having a hard time understanding that she can't jump on the tramp or ride her bike or play at the playground. She will sure be excited when she can throw this "cast away"!!

Poor Kiana! But way to go urgent care. That is so fast. Every time I have taken Kelsey, we were there for five hours or more. I would have done the same thing with Kelsey if she was acting dramatic about crying. Kelsey sometimes throws a fit over nothing so it is hard to tell when something really is wrong.

Don't worry, you're not a bad mom...we all would have done the same =). Poor Kiana! I hope she's up and around soon.
